What is a WHOIS lookup?

WHOIS lookup queries domain registry databases to retrieve registration information: the registrar, registration date, expiry date, nameservers, and (where not privacy-protected) contact details.

What is RDAP?

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern replacement for WHOIS. It returns structured JSON instead of plain text and supports standardized query patterns. ICANN mandated RDAP for all gTLDs in 2018.

Why is contact info hidden?

Since GDPR (May 2018), personal contact details in WHOIS records are redacted by default. You may see "REDACTED FOR PRIVACY" or generic privacy proxy addresses instead of real names.

How accurate is the expiry date?

The expiry date comes directly from the domain registry and is authoritative. However, many registrars auto-renew domains, so an imminent expiry does not always mean the domain will drop.
